There are almost no movies that have 7.1 surround sound. So the benefit is minimal vs cost for 7.1.

Just stick with 5.1.

Honestly, with your budget, you have two options.

  1. Home Theater in a box. Found typically at walmart, target etc.
  2. 2.1 System. Large front speakers and a bumpin sub.

That's about it.

Links don't work for the receivers...

I concur, 7.1 is useless I'd go with a quality 2.1 setup for your budget but if you have to have surround a bigger HTIB might be your best bet without knowing what you actually want.

Now do you want this for movies or a party setup? You can use them for either, but if your going to focus on one or another it is a lot easier to tailor the system to fit your needs.

Also, what size of room is this going to be in?

For a grand, I'd rather have a pair of relatively high efficiency floorstanders and a decent vintage integrated amp, plus a sub, than any mass-produced shit made today.

A pair of Klipsch Cornwalls or Choruses would use about half of that budget with a little careful hunting around Craigslist, and all you'd need for power is a decent integrated from NAD, Rotel, Marantz, or others...doubt the difference from a low-end surround setup is going to be that noticeable, if anything you'd appreciate the efficiency of better speakers anyway during parties.

I'm not too researched up on the high efficiency stuff Jim is talking about. About the only thing I'd suggest is to just do some MT's all the way around and do 5.1. I love the Dayton References and you could do something like either the 6 or 7" and a 1" tweeter. or even MTM's in the front (surrounds don't need to be anything more than decent MT's IMO). Then you could get a simple Pioneer 100w x 5 receiver for like 200 dollars and it could run everything. Except the sub, of course, which for you I'd just get a 12 or 15, maybe one of the Dayton's on partsexpress too, and put it in a big ported box tuned to about 30 with a 250 or 500 watt plate amp.

I have WMT's for my LCR and MTMs (were my old LC's when I did 2 channel so figured I may as well just use them) for my surrounds with a pioneer receiver like that and oh man does it get loud. can't even talk to the person sitting next to you on the couch.

For a $1g everyone else is dead nuts on 2.1 or even just 2 chn will be WAY better than a budget 5.1 setup. 6.1 & 7.1 are pretty useless (in a normal size room) and 5.1 is really only worthwhile if you are hardcore into movies and can actually budget for real gear. Even with a G I personally would go get a used receiver and used speakers as they will be far superior to what you can buy in any big box store and your budget is too small for boutique. Of course building your own would net the biggest bang for the buck, but that isn't trivial either.
