shuriken batteries

Recommended Posts

I just saw a post from xspower and one of the questions answered was it's ability to be used as a starting battery. I want to pick up a shuriken to replace my starting battery and was just wonderin if anyone uses them as a starting batt or if they are able to be used as one. I've read they are similar to kinetiks and saw those being used as starting batts. thanks.

any 12v battery can be used as a starting battery.

x2, they should work well (I only know of a couple people using them as starting batteries).

and as an overall, yeah, it can be used as a starting battery. i realllllly don't see why they wouldn't be able to, but i'll let you know of my personal experience

some batteries may not have enough CCA or CA's so when it gets cold it may not be able to output the necessary amps to start your car.

I compared the cranking amps with the battery I have now and it's much stronger, I have a duralast gold that lists 750 cold cranking Amps and 935 cranking Amps. The shuriken bt-80 has 1900 cranking amps, doesnt list cold cranking but if its anything like the duralast im guessin its a few hundred less than 1900.

That cant be cranking amps....

I know it says so on their company site but that's false advertising... it has to be.

CA means to output a particular current rating for 30 seconds straight down to 9.6 or 10.6v, cant remember off hand, at 32F.

There's no way there biggest battery, which is 120aH and ...2600CAs can do that at ~80lbs and only $300...

The XS D3100 is the largest battery they make and it's got 1,360CAs and 5000MAs.

What YOU are reading is the MA reading of the battery, they have it wrong or are incorrectly measuring CA specs.

I can tell you that while any 12v batt can be used as a starting batt, only some excel at it.

Shuriken and Kinetik have outstanding reserve capability but not so hot quick disbursement of power compared to other companies.

Xstatic Batcap and XS Power have xtremely high current discharge capabilities and are superior to starting vehicles.

Xstatic batcaps may be better at starting a vehicle, but XS Power batts have longer, LOT LONGER reserve capacity than Batcaps do as Batcaps are primarily focused on quick discharge only and that's not only what u need in a starting battery... For daily use and as a starting battery, XS Power all the way, or a strong enough Shuriken\Kinetik is fine too.

They business practices should be slaughtered for stating that on their site.

typically, the higher the CA or MA, the more a battery cost.

I can get 100aH batts for under $100 but they are terrible for really high MAs...

You get another 100aH batt with very high MA rating, the price sky-rockets.

looks like i pissed someone off... get neg rep for opening up about some batteries...

Oh well, people will realize eventually that companies who refuse to prove their specs tend to not live up to them as proven in the past with Kinetik.

Just got the sk-bt100 today, I will start test next week for some real world numbers like cca/ca I will also post my notes. Edited by loud by design

u have access to a load tester to properly test CAs?

This i'd like to see

lol good info Shizzon, it's sad when people give you a new rating for simply stating the truth. Shows just how immature some people can be. Whoever it was must feel butt hurt lol.

The Battery Specialists in my city has the tester I do not.

well, you better get some proof from them.

Go tell them that u have a batt of over 2000 cranking amps.. they're gonna stutter\stumble on that note and request to see this battery.

They should know how to test it, but just so u know, CAs are a full 30sec load so dont let them test it for just a few seconds.

I dont know what they have but dont let them use a battery tester like autozone has.. a true load tester.

I'm testing the battery just to know the real numbers, it may have 2250 cca or it may have 100 cca I just want to know. P.S. I'm on your side man, I think the numbers are funny. Edited by loud by design

oh i'm not discouraging you, i just want a test, the test, whatever test is done to be done right with proof, informative to everyone including me since i've never seen a test of their batts.

Well I emailed shuriken after reading this to tell them that I was considering using their 60ah model that lists like 1500 cranking amps as a starting battery to see what they thought about it. They emailed me this morning saying that battery cant handle being used as a starting battery, and that they only stock one battery that is designed for dual usage like that. So like you said the numbers they are posting for CA's are either exaggerated or they are measuring wrong. Thanks for letting me know those were phony numbers before I went out and threw that battery under the hood. I guess I'll just rig it up in the trunk.

there are many batteries that can't be used as starting batteries. They have maybe enough CCA/CA but if the electrical reserve is not high enough you can damage the battery when you pull to much from it. Deepcycle AGM batteries shouldn't be discharged more then 50%. So if it's below 0 outside, you have a little bit weak CCA and you use the car a lot during the winter to do small trips to the store. Then you'll probably discharge it below 50% if you do not use a battery charger, this will shorten the lifespan of your battery.

I have used a Kinetik HC800 as a starting battery on my 1.8l engine, it works ok, a bigger battery would be better. Especially if you have a big engine.

you can read a little bit about battery types here: Deep Cycle Battery FAQ

Some high horsepower race cars use the Kinetik KR912 in their Camping World race trucks and such which is the same as the HC800 and it starts up a 700-800 hp engines. The thing is if you have a smaller capacity battery and it gets taxed doing odds and ends with accessories on daily driver street cars, those loads are draining it more deeply than it would larger batteries. The 2 things that wear a battery out are cycles and more importantly the depth of those cycles.

I didn't say it can't start the car, it's a 36Ah battery which is about half of what my car normally have. A racing car and a daily driver is not the same thing. The race car doesn't have heated seats, AC, heat threads(?) in the back window, etc etc. A normal daily car puts the battery under pretty much abuse.
