My SA-8 box. WOW

Recommended Posts

I originally built a .35 sealed box for it but wasn't pleased with it because It just wasn't loud enough.

So I designed a new one and had my neighbor who has amazing wood working skills build.

I'm certain the port length and box size is not optimal but it works great none the less.

Roughly its a .66 ported box.

12x12x12 1/2mdf Needed to keep the ported box as small as possible because of room concerns.

Port opening is 1"

Tuned to about 45 hz.

Using a Boston Acoustics GTA 500m and giving it all 500 watts.

Turned the box out to take pictures, it normally faces forward.

I can't believe how hard this 8" hits. The last time I had a sub was In 1998, it was a 10 Kicker Comp and a California amp. Think it was pushing 500 watts if i was lucky.

Had the sub in a large ported box, it didn't sound nearly as good or hit as hard as this Sundown 8".

I am extremely pleased with the SA-8 and will be putting an SA-10 or 12 in my 1970 Dodge Dart when I start on the interior.

Another happy customer!

Very nice box! 45hz isn't all that bad for daily listening. If you enjoy it, don't change it.

really nice box, but that port design kinda taking away a little space from it, small box should keep it as simple as possible to for more inner space. I'm in the proccess of making a mini box prepare for the SA-8 too and thinking about 1"-1 1/4" port to achieve my tune level, but was told that's not recommended to go under 2" for port width, I would be intertest if you can take a vid of how it sound and are you really satisfy with 1" port? do you feel it's begging for bigger port? thanks...

I have nothing to compare it to besideds the sealed box I have. It doesn't seem to be begging for anything, but i'm not an audiophile like most of you guys. I don't hear any whistling or any goofy sounds from it.

I wanted more bass then what the factory VW system has and stumbled upon Sundown products.

I could try to take a video but i don't think it the bass will be picked up very well.

Thanks, I was extremely happy when my neighbor showed me it. First time I fired up the sub in it, I had a perma grin.

At this point, nothing is getting changed. I'll just be more careful in my next vehicle.

That box is very nice, a little on the small side and tuned high but if your happy that's all that matters.

What kinda vehicle is that? You said you face it forward, have you tried facing it towards the back? Allowing the sub/port to load off the rear truck/hatch can provide a little extra umph. Don't hurt to try.

Looks like a small hatch, so I would guess it is the Golf. I am going to be doing the same with my Jetta and the new SA-8V2. I just need to go ahead and pre-order it.

Correct, its in a 2011 VW Golf.

I haven't tried facing it backwards yet, maybe give it a try tonight.

Anyone know of a speaker grill that will work with the SA-8?

The one from the W7 would probably work. I am think about crafting my own incorperating the sundown logo.

How did he do the 45's on the port? I have never seen that before. Looks great.

Most likely used a chamfering bit on a router, before he assembled the box.
