Optima VS Xs as primary

stock alternator

will be doing big 3

curently have a napa battery (5100R)

1998 Honda CRV

wondering if i should go ahead and order a new battery with my sub and amp or just wait till its in?

and what is going to be a better battery for under the hood, optima yellow top or the xs?

or should i just keep the stock battery and run the yellow top in the trunk?

A Auto Zone platinum battery would be a good choice in place of the yellow top.

If you get an xs please make sure you get one if the ones meant for underhood use. Seen way too many 3100's swell up like balloons.

Hey - I'm not an expert with batteries but IMHO the optima is more designed as a cranking battery than is the XS. Dont get me wrong, i'm sure an XS will start a car but i think that your best bet is an Optima under the hood with an XS in the back (or as a secondary - wherever you put it). Im running a yellow top as a primary and an XS 1200 as a secondary (w/ isolater).

BTW:liljestrand, could you tell me more about the XS's swelling? My 1200 is under the hood in my yukon - do you think i'll have any problems?

XS, Odyssey, Juicebox and Batcap have practically the highest PHCA on the planet.

So, in terms of cranking.. they are the best.

In terms of heat, i run a D1200 under the hood and have for a year now.

You want to know why batts swell under other scenarios like that?

Because people are using aftermarket regulators that are charging above 14.4v.

I have a chart here which shows what voltage AGM batts should be charged at a given temperature and obviously the engine bay is hot so it needs the least amount of voltage.

You should use OEM regulators even on high output alternators to prevent overcharging.

I would not mix optimas and Xs batteries, I did not have good luck doing that. The proper XS will better under the good than a Optima. Our race car had a XS an so does my heavy duty work truck. The optimas like to float around 12.6-12.7 an the XS like to float around 13.0. For this reason I wouldn't mix. All the D batteries from XS are made to go under the hood. The XP series is not.

i did some snoopin around and found this battery on autozone

its a duralast gold battery

not sure if thats what your refering too (we dont have autozone were i live)

it seems to be better than the yellow top in every way, right?

biggest reinforced cased batt from xs is the D6500, so that would be my choice.

The D3100 is not reinforced. It's suggested to use heat wrap if you put one of those under the hood.

Ok, thanks for the webbing info. Well I guess I shouldn't be mixing optima with xs but I already am so I'll just keep it till I have a problem. I don't think anything catastrophic will happen (right?) it might just shorten the life of the batteries some.

If possible but I have run them mixed. Sears sells platinum agm battery ,but I don't know if one for your car.

Do not put a regular battery inside the vehicle with you. You need a AGM for the rear. Its not recommended to mix battery types (agm / non agm) like mentioned. But if you insist on doing so put the AGM in the rear.

I think the yellow top is not the duralast its just a lead acid battey.

You want a agm inside the car.
