Welcome to the IHoP v.2

Alright Sean, I'm at a crossroads. I love the idea of a down for warmth, but the moisture issue (I may need to wear it in strong rain for some sporting events or heavy snow shoveling) and fragility (tear it and the down is gone) honestly has me worried. For slightly less $$ they have a 3 in 1 which has the same "warm to" rating as the down. More weatherproof, more flexible, less fragile, cheaper. But I want it to be warm. Think this is a good bet as well ?

No comparison, the down will KILL it for warmth.  You are WAY over thinking YOUR moisture levels.  I am a sweaty pig.  I wear down everywhere...including tonight.

Primaloft is crap and ANY solution that requires you to zip it in is a fuck show.

I also don't think LL Bean stuff will fit you well from your descriptions of yourself.

That is the way I would go for sure.

I would rather have something I could be active in and would fit 99% of my low activity needs.

As Sean mentioned before, if you are doing nothing but sitting/standing a wool long coat will be the best Damn thing ever!

NO.  For sitting doing nothing Down >>>> Wool.  If doing exercise Wool >> Down.  If doing UBER exercise Wool >>>> Down.

Quoted to highlight that fit is key.  Poor fitting anything will be cold.  That took me YEARS to understand.  Always wondered why the little goretex Glenn Plake Northface shell I had was so warm compared to $800 3 in 1 coats.  The shell fit perfect, the other jackets didn't.

I'd take a $200 Eddie Bauer First Ascent Down over a $900 LL Bean 3 in 1 if it were really cold or I was doing mild exercise.  And I'd be way warmer in all situations.

Synthetic multilayer jackets are generally garbage.

EB FA quality is 10x or more the LL Bean stuff too.  The FA is better than North Face of 10 years ago which makes current North Face look like Columbia garbage.

I probably have more winter jackets than most of you have work shirts.

I love being outside in winter though.  By far my favorite time of year.

I have never had an outdoor coat that kept me as warm as my wool/cashmere topcoat. My down coat was supposed to be the warmest out there, and was much thicker than the ones he is looking at.

I had a down long coat and it was ok, but not as nice as my wool topcoat.

Either way, neither could be used for activities other than driving or standing.

as for fit, the down coat was correct, the topcoat was big unless I wore several layers. I never did. Just t shirt and dress shirt.

So I was just told the 4runner is the music choice at cheer practice. Guess that might be why the battery tender takes so long to go green lately.

If you aren't worried about your ass/thighs then the down jacket will be warmer.  Down coat > wool coat for no activity.  Benefit of wool is its moisture wicking possibilities but in a topcoat that really isn't normally the case in particular when they line them with moisture logging crap materials.

That one is beautiful Peng....

It was not a particularly exhilarating drive when I tested drove one. It also had the old iDrive. That thing was painful.

Next time I'm out sincerely car shopping I am going to hope the Porsche bubble is over, get my GT3 or Turbo and then a comfy sedan or pickup.

If not. It will be another time I shoot my whole wad on a mid to large executive type car. I love Helga. She is perfect at her job. It would take 2-3 cars to fulfill what she does.

It is interesting how I have not murdered the kid who hit me......

Best car I have ever had, and I am the least emotional about it.

I keep wanting something sportier when I am driving around. Then I remember the dipshit drivers outhere and the amount of people (and their size) I have in the vehicle at least a few times a month and the Tundra still makes the most sense.

I will say this though, in a few years I will be snagging a jeep. Nothing like topless doorless driving to the beach when its 95* and the sun is shining.

Glad to hear it. One of these days I might get around to having a "fun" car but right now Eileen is more than enough.
