1996 Jeep Cherokee

Recommended Posts

finally done with my exams and i can start work on the car.

objectives : a "budget" active system as stealthy as possible

nothing much at first. progress is very slow because of some family "issues" keeping me away...

first up, mounting the head unit (alpine 9813 i found locally) :

dash ripped apart, so i can fabricate some brackets to hold the hu in place

head unit running the stock speakers...just a quick test before the end of the day

decided to run all the wires before fabricating the brackets. space is very tight behind the head unit and i hope i can arrange the RCA's by pulling them lightly while pushing the head unit in the dash...

6 RCA cable's running on the passenger side...these were a steal, at 50$ for 90ft

i still need to solder the plugs on each end and arrange them under the carpet :)

updates :

soldered the rca plugs on the ends inside the dash.

decided to mount both the amps under the front seats but that means i need 90degree plugs. aside from difficulty in setting the gains and wiring them up, anything bad with mounting the amps under the seats ?

finished the bracket. it wasn't a big deal, but getting all the wires in was not cool :(

gallery_1211_14_545990.jpg

the head unit and dash will go in place once eveything is wired up. i don't want to take apart all the plastics and mess with the wires too much.

as far as the substage...i think i will copy JL's grand cherokee stealth box.

IMG_1440.jpg

lots of things to do before the substage...it's at the bottom of the list

the pic doesn't show, but the speedo goes all the way to 200

it's the "race" version.

thanks again Aaron. can't wait for the stuff to get here :)

Copy and improve. Nice.

My favorite line out of any thread on here lately, "lots of things to do before the substage...it's at the bottom of the list"

I think it'd be better if you stick the deadener to the metal rather than over the stock stuff

turns out that crap deadening was not stock and was glued over bolts and plugs. i removed as much as i could.

finished deadening the floor today. only 1 layer though. i doubled it up where the metal sounded really hollow.

driver's side

gallery_1211_35_1365103.jpg

here you can see some of the crap deadening that was reluctant to get off the metal.

gallery_1211_35_553384.jpg

passenger side firewall. i decided to go with small strips because i had trouble keeping the carpet out of the way so i had to apply the mat one-handed

one of the treasures hidden under the old mat

the parts of the seat that move while adjusting go down low enough to touch the amps, scratching them. so i decided to glue some strips of seatbelt material to retain some adjustability and protect the paint :D

gallery_1211_35_1793276.jpg

mostly done with wiring and such (i still need to run 1/0 from the battery to the distro.

i'm going to ground the amps on the bolt you can see sticking out from the floor.

IMG_1540.jpg

in case some of you are wondering, the car is (and always was) black. there were some small rust spots on the floor, just where the bolts go and i had to fix things up. the primer is red. overall i'm pleased with the state of the floor, considering it's age :D

updates :

got tight cleareance ?

gallery_1211_35_50516.jpg

IMG_1610.jpg

door panel and stock speaker removed.

IMG_1559.jpg

i thought about mounting the tweeters and came up with 2 places :

IMG_1600.jpg

IMG_1603.jpg

any ideas as to which place i should go for ? other placement ideas ?

the gallery has become very annoying. i'm uploading one pic and on the second one i get this error :

IPB WARNING [2] Division by zero (Line: 1477 of /modules/gallery/lib/gallery_library.php)

I would wait to mount the tweets until you get the mids in and are able to listen to both locations ( or maybe if different places if needed ) . :)

trying out the head unit and my new scope :

IMG_1575.jpg

IMG_1574.jpg

35 out of 35, 1kHz and 10kHz (don't ask which is which, i can't remember). is it me or it's not clipping ? felt kinda weird to not see something obvious when i went past 30 :(

Looks like a little bit of clipping with the three pixels at the top of the peak side by side like that :)
