sub making noise

So I was bumping my ssd yesterday on my home stereo receiver and I cranked it up a little bit to let the sub move a little bit.

I realized it was making noise and immediately turned it down.

The noise was like a vibrating slap, its kinda hard to describe.

The slap was only audible on certain frequencies.

I was probably putting a good 100 or so watts to it and I guess my receiver started clipping it.

Will clipping make your sub make a noise?

If its not that I was thinking maybe bottoming out?

I don't really know whats causing it but I'm hesitant to put it on 800 watts.

box clap.

I actually don't think it was clipping at all.

My receiver wasn't hot at all and the sub wasn't hot either.

I'm sure I could give it more power without it clipping I just didn't know what was causing the noise so I didn't want to damage it.

What is dust cap slap and box clap?

dust cap slap.= if the dust cap is a little lose.. it will slap... and sound loud.... also check for tinsel slap..

box clap...= if the box is not jointed well.. it will push apart and then back togather CLAP!

I had a guy build a bad box for me and it did that noise.. is it coming from the port?

I thought that Fi put the tinsel leads under the spiders to stop the tinsel slap?

I'll check anyways, and my box is pretty solid I believe.

Will any of these things hurt my sub?

edit: no it isn't coming from the port, I can tell its coming from the sub.

and its more like a wobble type of rattle in the sub, its not like slap.

I'd guess you played it below tuning and mucked up the suspension a little. I doubt your receiver has a subsonic filter.

Ah your probably right.

My receiver has no subsonic filter or anything.

And you can hear the vocals through the sub when I have my bookshelf speakers off, I don't know if that is normal or not.

depends on what caused it. If it was bottomed out, yeah that's not healthy for it. If the amp was clipping at about 100 watts, it won't do anything. If something had already come loose in the motor and was bouncing around causing the noise, well, the damage was already done.

clipping does make a "popping" sound. but i have also heard that noise before with one of my old setups and it turned out there was a tiny hole in the rubber surround. only as big as maybe a pen point but it was enough to scare the f... out of me
