It wasn't a virus, it was a link to a sex site. I about replied to the idiot telling him not to send me his crap ever again.

Unfortunately that was most likely a waste of time. I doubt he'd ever come back here. He was just a drop a link and run sort of member.

I got my second one this morning 7:00 a.m. CST.

The webmaster here should have a log file on all IP addresses and you can track it down the spammer's webhosting server using Arin or Internic. The webhosting service can look up the user and shut him down. I've had to do that a couple of times. I managed to even speak to the owner of the server because their phone number is posted on Arin or Intenic. It works. I was under constant attempted attacks. The sad part is they can just go somewhere else and do the same thing. Perhaps a stricter verification should be in place before they are allowed to post.

It's annoying right now, just wait until they learn how to attach a virus. It appears that these guy/s are so smart, they are able to hack the websites and get admin privelidges and mass mail. Good time to change the Admin password to something that is so difficult to hack....just a thought.... :chat:

I don't think you need admin privileges to send out a multiple recipient message. There's a member list right here and you can have some bot crawl that, then send out individual pm's. The title of the last pm just said "From Administrator" to fool people.

That said, it already looks like they use CAPTCHA to validate user sign-ups. I guess they could add some question like "two plus twelve equals?" but one quick look from the perpetrator can have this exception added to his bot's registration process. Might be worth a shot, though.

EDIT - Also, people don't usually go through this much trouble just to advertise a porn site; there is likely some drive-by infection attempt at the other end of this link.

Adult Friend Finder is the largest, most effective advertiser on the internet. I can't freaking stand the spam, though.

I didn't know this information was openly available. The spammers can do anything they want with this info posted. Every webmaster's nightmare for sure. I now have my Yahoo website set up so I have to authorize any posts as I started receiving a lot of this stuff and much more adult and vulgar garbage a year ago. Kids go to my site. It's a lot of work but I don't mind the trouble. This is a much bigger site and the additional verification work would be prohibitive. I had a phpBB forum attached to my website and I closed it down after about 3 months due to these idiots. I wish the Administrater the best with this one....

Member has been banned by Mark along with the second one who came through doing the same thing. I just IP banned also to stop future spam attacks from that IP. Did a little research and it seems there is a rash of this going around the internet where an actual human is signing up and then activating a bot to mass PM every member in the member base except the administrators. I believe I found the patch to stop this, Mark will install it very soon. Our CAPTCHA is actually set as high as it can go, so all has to be done by human interaction.

The funny thing is that we broke our members on in one day record because of the spam.

Denim,

After these past two days of receiving the spam, I've come up with a thought. If one were to look at the number of posts the spammer has made, which in this case I beleive has been -0-; it would be best to delete the post for our own personal puter protection and not post anything about their spam. You (Denim) would find about it anyway and they wouldn't be getting their jollies that they have the hornet's nest stirred up. Some folks get off in the strangest ways. If they are ignored....they may move on....

Cheers

That is a thought, but in this case, I was not spammed, and I believe they do that so the account is not banned until the admin is notified. So I appreciate any and all info on things like this so I can take care of it as fast as possible.

Thanks. :)

The people that have sent me PM's with info or issues (other then the mod team of course) are a help as they show they care about the site and keeping it running in good shape. :)
