Thoughts on Image Dynamics (ID-max) Subs???

Recommended Posts

I can't personally comment on SSA woofers, but I just hooked up my SA12s and I'm honestly impressed. I was running diamond audio D6s(SQ subs) prior to them. the only thing they don't out preform the diamonds in is upper end "tight" bass as some might call it. But that's not saying they don't preform well in that area. I'm quite happy with them :)

oh and im not sure but if i do get the z or ID and run about 1000watts to it, do you think i would need to get another batt. right now i got a sax 125.2 running my

CXS62 V.2 - Image Dynamics 6.5" 2 ohm Components. and a Saz 1000d running my alpine 12" dual 4 ohm wired to 2 ohm so its seeing about 600 watts.

i would get the dual 2 ohm Z and wire it to 1ohm so it would see about 1000watts. my car did fine with my previous setup, so i would be adding bout 400 watts.

and then i will upgrade my sub amp later on down the line.

i really like my sundown so

id prob get the 1200d or 1500d for my next sub amp

If you are set and have the money then buy the idmax, it's a very good driver. If not, an ssa icon is right up there, I would personally choose the icon, because its cheaper, cheaper to recone, and I have guaranteed direct customer service. JMO.

Since money isn't a big issue. I'd go with the sundown Z. They work well in small boxes, which saves you trunk space. They sound good, and they will take a lot of power and get very loud. So if you upgrade your amp and electrical later, you won't need to replace the sub. You can measure the port area very easily. It's just the width times the height. If you have enough port area, you could run the Z in your current box.

I think the IDMax is overpriced.

Add to that I don't think it's the category of sub you want. Your ONLY reference to SQ is the term itself, but you disregard its meaning and just add sound good. I'd bet even a rather SPL oriented driver would have more than enough quality for what you are after. This confusion is exactly why Fi built the Q...although 95% of buyers of the Q should have bought a BL (if they were only buying Fi).

There are a ton of good options. I'd rather have a driver from here than an IDMax anyday if I were you.

dont have any experience with the z, but from what I have read it's also a good sub and a good company...

The fi q is another good option.

cool. just measured and its 14inches long by 2 inches wide. is that too small?

oh and do you think i will need to upgrade my amp. saz 1000d does bout 1000watts at 1ohm and thats what i was going to drive which ever sub i would get. i want to try and not have to get an extra batt if i dont have to. and i have big 3 done. anything else?

2.0^3ft tuned to 33hz will be just fine for a single 12" Z.3

I choose the Z.3 as well. I like to be able to get nuts with the volume control once in a while but my real passion is for clean, detailed music. The Z.3 fits the bill. Amazing driver.

thanks man. yea its good to be able to reuse this box. argent audio really made it amazing, and was hoping to be able to keep using it incase i got another sub. now is it a big deal that the opening diameter isnt the same for each sub. im pretty sure the Z is a lil bigger, but not sure. the alpines diameter is 10 13/16"

ya mainly its between I.D., sundown, and SSA for a new sub. i was leaning towards the sundown or ssa but the I.D. really caught my attention recently

Sadly, I have to report that ID is not owned by the same people anymore, having a close friend who has been part of their team for over a decade; we have discussed what that means about their products/customer service etc... and he basically told me it's going to be a lot like Diamond Audio's sell out... A good name, but product is dated and will probably never improve in terms of quality.

If I had to choose an SSA sub for sound quality it would probably be the Icon, if you would like to keep the build budget friendly, the Gcon line is also an excellent choice.

yea that sucks. i have an ID component set up front, ran off a sax 125.2 and they are amazing. i bought another set just incase for later on down the line. i was think of the IDmax but now im leaning more towards a sundown Z v.3. or an ssa sub

I can honestly say that Sundown products are amazing, and I have no doubt in my mind that the SSA products are anything less than audiophile porn..

I know for a fact that SSA will be the first place I'm looking for new subs when the time is right.

i have own both 12" alpine type R & 12" idmax in both sealed & ported boxes

type R is a "all-rounder" subs that can play both low & high bass well depending on the enclosure & how u set ur lpf & ssf

the idmax will murder the type R in every way meaning both sq & output

idmax : if u want it loud , it loves a large ported box (between 2.5-2.75cut) tuned high 20s to low 30z & a clean true 1000wrms is perfect for it

idmax also sounds great in a sealed box if u want it that way for a SQ applications but output is alot lower sealed

hope that helps

thanks alot that helps a good bit. Ya i love I.D. (my front comps) so i assumed they had a pretty good sub, but just never really heard anything about it. and also would going a lil lower than 2.5, prob round 2.2 ish give or take still be good? i have a 2011 toyota camry and the trunk is pretty big but id like to have at least some space left. my 2.0 box for my alpine was nice, cause i still had some space for luggage. i would prob just get it to be as wide as possible

and did you have the chrome series or the regular one?

wow i forgot i posted here

mine is the chrome basket model

imho the sub doesnt really shine in a small ported box since it makes the sub sound punchy & hard hitting

coincidentally i recently temporarily had mine in a 2cuft 35hz box & it doesnt sound close to its true potential so i wouldnt recommend 2cuft at all

its true that at $350 its kind of pricey where they are other """SQL""" subs out there like Fi Q for $284 ,IA flatlyne $319 , SSA gcon $199 etc that might give u a batter value for $

i suggest u email each company with ur existing box specs & ask then if it will work
