Exodus Anarchy (some pics included)

Recommended Posts

I figured I would share... I bought these a few months back dirt cheap. I was planning on using them in my car, but they are just too damn big for my doors. I wanted a bit more bottom end up front then my Hertz Milles were delivering. I love the Mille tweet, but I missed the bottom end of my CDT ES-06s.

Anyways, I took some shots of it next to my ES-06. A single Anarchy weighs in at about 8 pounds apiece. For comparisons sake, the box with both my ES-06s weighed in at 6 pounds. I thought the ES-06 was huge when i first got them. Bigger then any other 6.5 mids I can recall having my hands on by a long shot. Without a doubt they are the heaviest mids, by a mile... I figured i should share some speaker porn...

Due to their size they won't be going in my car. But I think they may help push me into the 2 channel home audio system I have been planning in my head and procrastinating on for the past 7 years. The plan is a Dipole system, powered by tubes. The Anarchys would do great in ported boxes at the base of the dipole speaker baffle, which will help reduce platform size because of the weight. The plan is some Seas mids and Planar tweets to round out the chores.

I have the Anarchys and ES-06s if you guys want more pics.

Wow! Impressive motor on the Exodus driver.

The motor is a beast. I don't know if you clicked all the images, but this one shows the ES-06 without the boot for a better comparison:

The top plate is really awe inspiring. The thing that amazed me was the weight. When they showed up at the shop the box was huge and weighed so much I thought they doubled my order accidentally. I was shocked when I found 1/2 the box stuffed with paper. I really wish I could get a bit more room inside the doors, and I may just do a little spacer add on just to get them in and give them a listen.

I really want to hear these things. So i may just do it some time in the near future for a goof.

I'm looking getting at a pair of those Anarchys for my doors. What is their mounting depth?

I go out to the shop and measure them today for you. My biggest issue is the diameter of the motor.

3 5/8"

Impious, I am actually very interested in hearing XBL2 in the midbass/midrange region. The way they handle subbass with such transparency, I can only imagine how they will sound where it matters most. I would love to get a hold of the XBL2 tweets that Dan has designed as well, but I have no idea who bought the design. I have read about some breakup nodes starting at or around 2K, so a notch may be in order for a 2 way. TBH, that is why I am considering using them only for the midbass in a 3 way, although I may actually cross them a little higher then I normally would in a 3 way design. I guess it will just be best to drop them in some type of install and start measuring, but I have so much on my plate right now that this will have to wait.

Are you a TOOL fan or just an Alex Grey fan?

Kevin had said the break-up was a bit higher than that, and the graphs he has posted on the site show that as well. But I honestly haven't read a single review of the actual drivers.....I sort of tracked them long enough to jump on the sale price, then forgot about them since I'm still a while from actually using them.

I'm a TOOL fan....they're the only reason I even heard of Alex Grey :)

Impious - How would you rate the Anarchy against the JL ZR800? I know this is opinion, but i take a lot of stock in your opinion.

I wish i could recall where I read reviews. I might try CA.com or DIYMA. I have read 3 reviews all claiming breakup nodes from somewhere between 2 and 2.5K. I am not surprised, really, as this should be expected with aluminum cones, no matter how hearty they are constructed. Were I to make a single change on this driver, it would have been a pulp cone.

cvame918, while I am not impious I will provide a little insight. The first thing to consider is the Anarchy is an 8 ohm driver, so be sure you have the ability to power it correctly. The ZR is more of a dedicated midbass driver, where the Anarchy will be very happy into the midrange. In looking at the usable frequency response of the ZR (50-500Hz) it will be very safe to assume it has a fairly high inductance, although I have not found a published LE specification. The higher inductance limits it's frequency response as well as it's speed. While they will both get nice and low, with authority, I expect the Anarchy to be punchier and more responsive down low as well. It will be more transparent, where the ZR will be more of a silky smooth driver. The Anarchy's XBL2s BL linearity will be an improvement over the overhung design of the ZR as well, making it more accurate.

Aside from the power issues, based on the loads of the 2 drivers, the Anarchy will best the ZR in every aspect from an objective point of view... Subjectively, however, it is difficult to render an opinion, as most people don't like sub bass, and midbass drivers that lack distortion.

Thank you Sandt3. I've narrowed choices to the ZR or the Anarchy. I don't have any shops near by to hear them so I have to read as much as I can. Will the Anarchy go up into the lower mid range area and deepen it up a bit?

From the reviews I have read they do very well up to 2KHz., but according to the pdf it does well up to, and maybe slightly beyond 2.5K IIRC... but it has been a while since I looked at the PDF... My initial intent was to use it as part of a 2 way front stage, so yeah it will do very well with midrange duties.

...But...

Deepen the midrange? I am not sure what you are looking for. What do you have in the front stage that you are looking to "deepen"? Is this an aftermarket component set, or a stock front stage? Should I assume that you are looking to pull the image forward by lowering the HPF? If so, yes. This will get down low and dirty. But I would hate to give you any misinformation, so if you can clarify I will try to give you some information based on what you are looking for.

So please try to include pertinent info, like the equipment you are using, the vehicle it is in, driver locations, and what your exact goals are. One thing I always try to do is give advice or opinions based on the person who is asking the question's goals. Nothing is more irritating then seeing people trying to talk everyone else into what they would do, not what is best for the user and system in question. Everyone has different tastes, as musical enjoyment is subjective, where the actual exact reproduction can be, to a great extent, objective.

That would be a looong story LOL. Besides this is your thread sandt8, I don't wanna hijack it. Impious is walking me through a midbass set up on my thread.

I'm looking for some strong midbass drivers that have good output and ive heard about anarchy, but never heard them personally.

Most people prefer distortions in these ranges as the seem louder because of the distortion. The drivers tend to provide more of a presence.

Ask many people who have heard a Brahma MKII what they thought about it. Being super linear many people felt it was non-existent in the system, or too laid back not enough impact.

I have seen exodus' website and video's. This driver looks to be very impressive.

Do you have any experience with peerless sls's ( 6 1/2" or 8" ) that would allow you to compare the two?

I'm currently trying to redo my system and these could be what I'm looking for.

I have heard the 6 1/2s and they do deliver.

The Anarchys will have more output, simply due to the added displacement, but they may be a bit dry for you from what I have read of your posts. Also, the Anarchys are 8 ohm units, requiring about double what the Peerless require. Remember, typically 100 watts RMS at 4 ohms equates to 50 watts RMS at 8 ohms. Also, these are really huge motors. If I were to get something for a car door to handle the midbass chores, I might look more into the CSS SDX7, keeping in mind that these are dedicated midbass drivers. But here again, keep in mind they are still 8 ohm units. Also, they simply do not have the same high frequency extension that the Anarchys do.

You might want to look into the ES-06 from CDT. That is the driver in the comparison pics I posted above. It has extension similar to the Anarchys, and it is a driver with more presence.

sandt38, Thank you for that information.

I have gotten more info. from you in one post (in your thread) than I have in my own thread asking for help/suggestions.

i will do some reading on the speakers you've listed.

Thanks for your anwser brother. I agree an untrained ear will choose distortion over sterileness in the midbass range, I just wanted you subjective opinion.
