why was/is this alpine amp $250?

I have seen this amp at bestbuy and on crutchfield for $250+

It is only 650 watts supposedly and not 1ohm stable

So i am wondering is it over priced?

am i missing something here?

a hifonics amp is half that price and double the boom

 

I am asking because my friend has one and we're trying to find a good 12" to put it on

its funny to me how things work.  Back in the day, when amps were made differently, the going rate was about $1 a watt.  So, in general, a 600 watt amp would run you right around $600.  Today, a gazillion watt amp will set you back $200.  Its very sad to me the way things have headed.  Guess I'm just getting old.

Are you saying $250 is too much for this amp?  I would gladly take this $250 650 watt Alpine over any of $250 1200 Korean or chinese amps.

And Alpine designs their own products rather than going to a Korean build house, selecting a board and case like it's a fast food restaurant and then selling it on the open market.  It's much cheaper to buy a board from a buildhouse, who sells that same board to anyone with enough money to meet minimum order quantities, than it is to design, produce and market your own product.

There are plenty of reasons for an amp not to be 1ohm stable. have you noticed how bad efficiency drops as you go down in ohm load? That's just one reason of many....

I thought the point of this thread was to match a 12" sub yet all you talk about in your title and comments is whether it is worth it or not... your friends owns it already so who cares if its worth it, he apparently thought so and has it to use....

Quality depends on the circuts used example a resistor with a 1%tolerance

will cost about ten dollars and one with a 5% tolerance costs about 50 cents.

Higher percentage tolerance can cascade "strain" a circut board causing premature faillure.

It's not all about overhead
