Anyone have a hitch pin that doesn't rust shut? Fucking keyed ones have to be cut off. Might as well weld the fucker in and if that took the rattles away, I'd be fine with it.

They make stainless hitch pins don't they?

Yep, just bought one. Now to fill the lock with dielectric so that the salt doesn't make the key break off the next time I need to take it off.

So I've been craving sushi thanks to Ryan. I had it in the keys and only got cooked shrimp. I've never been able to taste a difference in the fish, I can tell major differences in texture but that's all. I did notice that the place I had it in the Keys had fantastic ginger, better than what I'm used to.

Tonight got a sampler from Laishley Crab House, reviews online say it's so-so at best. The wasabi is way more potent than most, about 10x stronger actually. Anyway, I got the sampler with the intention of trying the different fish and once again, I could tell no difference. I am not sure which fish is which, aside from tuna.

The run down. First I try the cooked nigiri. No idea what kind of meat it was, thought it was eel possibly from the looks of it but the texture wasn't anything like the eel i've had in the past. The meat was possibly smoked, flavor was fantastic on this but I can't really describe it with any detail. I can say I really enjoyed it.

Next, the shrimp, which was highly dissapointing, I think it was overcooked because it was quite tough, much tougher than anything else in the platter actually.

Moving on, the orange striped Nigiri, which had some of the best texture but I honestly could still tell no difference in taste between this and the other raw fish. Next was the tuna which was almost too loose. No idea how else to describe it but when I would chew it it reminded me of something that had been stretched and pulled apart (think tenderized meat but this hadn't been beaten).

The pure white nigiri on the left had fantastic texture as well, right up there with the orange striped and probably better if I could have gotten past the look of it. For some reason the pure white kind of turned me off. The pink to white nigiri was ok but nothing to report really. The upper right nigiri was the last one I tried and probably the least favorite but I think that's because I had already killed my apetite at that point. (i ate the maki rolls almost immediately, still my favorite form of sushi, and that tuna was much more firm than the nigiri piece).

and now for a couple pics...

btw the "salad" you can see was fucking nasty, the lettuce was wilted and it reminded me of bad kimchi. I've never had it before so I didn't know what to expect but the flavor was very "korean" don't know how else to describe it.

Thank you, that made my morning. Descriptions were funny. :) If you want it clarified I'd be glad to help.

<--happens to love most Japanese salad dressings, that being said there are some seriously crappy restaurants out there.

yes please, especially identifying the fish if possible.

Left to right:

Escolar (also known as super white tuna, if it was REALLY chevy then its Squid/Cuddlefish but I doubt it as its unusual in a sampler), Yellowtail, Shrimp, Snapper, Eel, Salmon, Tuna

The Maki looks like a simple inside out tuna roll with dualing sesame seeds.

The eel is grilled and regularly reheated in a microwave, lol.

As for tasting, the biggest mistake most people make is they dip the rice into the wasabi/soy mixture instead of the fish. This has the tendency to pull the flavors away from the fish making them taste mostly like the dip. If you dip the fish, the salt from the soy will enhance the flavor and the wasabi shouldn't be mixed so strong it overpowers everything. Even if it is strong in wasabi this way you will taste the fish first and then have your nose walloped by the wasabi.

Interesting you noticed a fluctuation in wasabi strength as generically speaking everyone uses the same powder. It isn't even wasabi actually but a replacement since wasabi is expensive. If it felt strong perhaps it was fresher as with any dried anything the older the weaker.

Texture wise the Escolar, Tuna & Salmon should be the most buttery with the Escolar leading the way. The Yellowtail is somewhere in between the escolar and the snapper, but a really fatty one will be very akin to the escolar and is heavenly. BY FAR my favorite sushi when its the right fish and the right cut.

The pure white should turn you off, its probably the only sushi that truly isn't so good for you. That being said, it isn't that bad either. :fing34:

The ones you liked the least this time I would eat first next time. It is hard to get beyond the textural/visual for someone who isn't used to it. That and the stupid simplified closed minded Western idea of eating has you naturally convinced that raw fish is bad before you even try it. Even when you know better you are a bit brainwashed. Don't let that history ruin it for you. It is very possible the snapper was a little older though which will make it more fishy and add a little effort in the chewing. Truly fresh it also melts in your mouth, but not as much as the fattier fish we pointed out earlier.

And yes, if the shrimp was rubbery they overcooked it which doesn't bode well for the rest of the experience as it is SUPER easy to cook.

Any hint in the salad? Was it mayo based, lemon flavored or soy?

Part of the joy of the eel is the sauce. It is a sweetened "broth" made from the remnants of the fish, soy and rice wine.

Oh and the eel looks overcooked and nasty as well.

Possible the snapper was flounder as well as they can look similar, but it is more likely snapper in a sampler.

*based on the fact they serve you the cheap stuff in a sampler ;)

I did that years ago and the lock still seized up. I just never got around to cutting the damn thing off.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has just announced a safety recall affecting 69,590 model year 2011 Subaru Legacy and Outback vehicles. The recall concerns adhesive, or a possible lack thereof, used to affix moonroof glass to its retainer. This action covers 2011 Legacy and Outback models manufactured from August 3, 2010, through July 1, 2011.

NHTSA says an inadequate amount of adhesive on the moonroofs of affected models could allow the glass to loosen or even detach while the vehicle is in motion. This flying glass, says the agency, could become a road hazard and possibly even lead to a crash.

Its even funnier because my grandmother purchased a brand new '11 Legacy and is making a 550 mi. trek down here tomorrow...hopefully in one piece...

Netflix is rebranding its 12-year-old movies-by-mail service as Qwikster and adding video games to its catalog, Reed Hastings, the company's CEO, announced Sunday night. The Web-streaming portion will continue to be called Netflix, he wrote on the company's blog.

After the separation, people who subscribe to both services will have to log into two separate websites, Netflix.com and Qwikster.com, to manage their movie queues and account information, Hastings wrote. Customer reviews and ratings from Netflix will be ported to Qwikster for the launch, but after that, people will have to rate and search for movies on each site separately, he wrote.

Hooray for unnecessary brand diversification.

Wow, that makes Netflix suck. Glad I cancelled my membership.

awesome, thanks for the run down.

The salad, it was shit, i only had a few bites. No mayo or lemon but may have had a bit of soy. There was something vegetable based that had been ground up fresh in it but no real flavor, and definitely sesame.

Hum, I might have to cancel my account, which sucks as I really like having movies. So I might just go to streaming.
