anybody know what wrong?

Recommended Posts

well my friend bought subs, an amp, and a box from bestbuy. so i told him to let me install it but he said his neighboor has alot of experience (which wasnt true). so any way the guy hooked it all up. he did a nice job on the electrical wiring but when wiring subs to the amp he ran the wires in series which presented an 8ohm load and the amp isnt made for 8 ohms. he was supposed to run them in parallel. im not sure y it worked but it did. then my friend said the amp kept shutin off after a few minutes of play, but then would turn back on in about 7 seconds. but my friend kept on bumpin for like an hour. then i went over there today and rewired the subs in parellel and we bumped it for a lil and he said it must be fixed cuz it usally turns off by now. but then it turned off. and then back on again.

so my question is do u think my friends amp is done for good or is something else the problem?

the subs are 2 12" kenwoods single 4ohm voice coils, the amp is a monoD kenwood

sub model=KFC-W3011

amp model= KAC-8104D

o ya it doesnt seem like a voltage problem either.

by the way i may be wrong but i dont think u can ruin an amp by running it at a higher ohm load. now a lower ohm load is a different story

check the whole wiring might have a loose cable somewhere or something is hitting your power wire like a nail and is causing to protect it self

to juslivin: haha ya i no best buy wasnt a good idea.

well the amp isnt actually going into protection mode it just completely shuts off.

it is grounded to the the hinge of the trunk and the paint is sanded.

and i do not think the power wire is touching anything.

Needs to be grounded to chassis (Frame) of car not the sheetmetal body!

The sheetmetal doesn't carry the same resistance as the chassis.

I bet 99% that's the problem.

hinge of trunk=ground=problem.... bad idea from the get go...

sounds like a loose connection somewhere though.. has to be loose power, ground, or remote line for the amp to just shut off with no lights

The frame is the best... but even just the trunk floor is 20 times better than where it's grounded now..

Cheap way... Wrap it around a mounting bolt on a seat..(shine it all up first)

At least the bolt is threaded into the frame.

Correct way... drill a hole, add a grommet through the wall or floor then find a good spot,

easy to get to, drill a hole either through or thread (tap) into the frame,

clean it up till it shines, slap a ring terminal on the end of the wire,

use a stainless bolt with washer.

Sheetmetal grounds are good for things like lights and acc.

that's about it.

I've seen the problem happen at least a couple dozen times...

It's a very common mistake. (One of the most common)

A lot of people just don't know,

I didn't at first either.

Since i've done it the righ way for years now,

I've never had a problem

and it fixes this issue every time.

It the amp getting hot in any way?

Making the amp see a higher impedance is not going to be a problem, check the wiring and make sure you have a good ground.

the amp is not getting hot.

I'd say it's the ground location then.

Like I said, I'm 99% positive on this one.

Gotta leave 1% for error! LOL
