equipment selection

Recommended Posts

need an amp and sub(s) for a friend's s-10. doing a blow thru but would like to use no larger then 12's... tried talking him into 15's but its a no go.

1 Previous products that you have used (i.e. amplifiers if its an amplifier question, etc)

-looking for comparable output to my 12" AA arsenal on ~500 rms

-previous set ups was a pair of rf p1 10s sealed behind the seats. however he's a tall guy and doesn't want anything behind his seat- hence blow thru.

1.5 other equipment installed

-rockford p400.4 4 channel on the door and dash speakers.

2 Budgetary constraints

-under 400 for sub and amp. wiring will be 4gauge knukonceptz w/ big three if needed (could run 0 gauge if you guys think we need to)

3 Vehicle which the equipment will be used in

90's s-10 regular cab (no back seat)

-blowthru :drink40:

4 Other products you have heard, but have not owned that you enjoyed & their install particulars.

-see number 1.

5 Musical preferences

-anything but would like decent output for rap

6 System goals

-classic "loud on a budget setup", not looking to sound amazing, he doesnt have the ear for it anyways.

-the sub or subs will be ported obviously

7 List any research you have previously done

some products being considered so far

-ssa dcon 12'" x2 ~$250 w/ a cadence txa-3002 (600rms) ~$120

-other subs could be fi ssd 10 or 12, ia 187 pair (wish he would do 15's... i wouldnt even ask you guys for help if he would let me do them... lol) maybe kicker l5/l7 off ebay... sundown SA-8

-other amps could be rf prime 500.1

Might need a fiberglass bed cover / shell or a good spray-on liner kit. :drink40:

Start looking for the rubber boot for the cab and bed (getting harder to find).

hope this helps a little ...

You have a pretty solid list of choices. If it were me I'd probably go with either 2 12 dcons or 187s on either of the stated amps. If it matters to him he could go with the Rockford amp so he has matching amps.

I'm not sure if you're a brand whore or not, but here's my suggestion and I promise you it'll freakin wang for a lil under $400.

2 12" Crunch Ground Pounders (GPV12D4) and a Kole QX1-3000D

The Ground Pounders are known on the maxxsonics forums to be budget monsters. Two older model 15's hit a 155 on the dash in a van, while around 3000 watts a piece for a burp. The new model is slightly less beefy, but more sensitive, and is still a great budget sub.

Kole QX1-3000D- This is a monster of an amp for the price. The amp really does over 2240 RMS @ 1 ohm. The amp is also .5 ohm stable. There are a ton of clamp tests for this amp, and it puts out ridiculous power for the price. I've owned 5 of these now over the years and never had one blow on me or clip a sub. The amp has the same guts as the Soundstream Picasso 2000D, PA A3000DB, Opti2000D and a couple of older Planet Audio amps.

Here's a few pics of amp guts. The first is a 600 watt rms 2 channel cadence, the 2nd is the "kole" board Dude, it's not even close....

An Icon 10" or 12" in a ported box, on a 1000 watts amp (the cheapest you can find).

Maybe he wants 2 subs? With $400, he'd better try only one sub.

If he just wants to be loud, you have the Alpine type R. People seem to like this sub in the USA, it's cheap and can be loud too.

With one or 2 type r's, he will have money left for a better amp.

Good luck !

im much into brands but ill have to look into this more... im skeptical of clamp test (distortion etc..), running alot of power would be cool but the electrical would need some work... i would probably only run that amp at 4ohm, it would give him the chance to double up the subs to 4 12's and run at 1ohm later on, which would be pretty crazy.

I have some used Hertz ES300 12" drivers that I would be willing to off pretty cheap. Dont know where you are so I dont know if the shipping would kill me. :peepwall: I believe they are 350 rms each though.

The amp is SOLID. I can honestly find 5 articles on the net where they have been clamped and put out power. Pasmag ( a reputable audio mag) Tested one when they first came out and made 2240 rms @ 1 ohm with less than 14 volts. That wasn't a peak either, that was measured four seconds after initial burp. In terms of power, they make less than a GP3000D Pro, and a Audiopipe 3000d, but I'd guarantee you in a high volt low ohm burp they'd push more power than a AQ2200D. Anyway, in your low power situation, the kole won't even get warm, and will not send a dirty signal. Mine gets warm @ .5 ohm, but how many $200 amps do you know that play .5 ohm all day everyday like a champ. Here's a birth certificate to one of the amps that it shares the same board with

327981.jpg

Well, get what you want, I spam this forum with praise about that amp all the time. So, I'll shut up now :)

Here is one.

I bought my MB Quart from the same ebay seller.

That's a good seller. I got 3 of my koles from them. They were selling the koles for $169 shipped. You can get the audiopipe 1500, but for $5 more you can get a refurb kole from them (90 day warranty) IMO if you want more power and wiring flexibility, get the kole, if you like the 1 year warranty, get the audiopipe.

for sub i would say go with a kicker L7 12". Just my 2 cents

what im unsure on guys is whether or not he will ever use the 2200rms.... so maybe a kole 2400d or the audiopipe?

his stock alt is 105 amps, assuming big three and only one battery (which he just replaced) under the hood. about how much power can we expect to run?

there is really no point to getting the 3000d, beside wiring options, since he will most likely never use the power

Qx1-3000d is the exact amp I just bought 3 of from the vminnovations seller. The picture is different than the amp you will receive. The guts on one of my koles I opened actually say "A3000DB" on the board. That's the amp that pasmag tested that pushed 2240 @ 1 ohm. That amp isn't going to blow your subs as long as you are responsible with setting the gain on it. I've ran a pair of 6.5's and a single 8" before with no problem. If you are worried about your electrical system, don't. Just turn the amp down.

Here's my sub suggestion for you. These subs, are cheaper and they have more cone area too, which is always a plus. I think they are basically sold out of the PG'S :(

Hifonics BRZ12SQD4 12-in Square Car Subwoofer / Brutus Sub Woofer

My friend ran 2 L7 12's on a kole, and that shit easily outpounded 90% of local systems. I think the brutus subs are pretty comparable to l7 12's. If I recall correctly "pornstar" of team maxxsonics ran brutus squares for his bassrace vehicle back a few years ago.

found a pair of pg rsdc 12s

ill try to get him to snag these up soon and then pick out the amp (either or the koles or the audiopipe will put out enough juice @ 2ohms so ill see if he wants the longer warrenty (audiopipe), more power (3000d) or save 30 bucks (2400d).
